Welcome back to our 4 part preview of the Gator Bowl featuring…you guessed it Mississippi State Bulldogs and the Michigan Wolverines. Today we will be examining the key matchups for a Wolverines victory.
Speed Vs. Strength- for Michigan this should be a classic battle Between strength of a big defense and a speedy spread offense. The interesting part here is that usually it would be Michigan on the Strength side, not the Speed. But as we all know the 2010 Maize and Blue are all about Speed Led by Big ten player of the year Denard Robinson we should see the Big Scary MSU defense struggle all day with the speed of Michigan’s runners. The time off will also help heal some wounds and we will see the full power Laces, Shaw and Vincent Smith attack.
Michigan WR Vs. Themselves- Ok I hate to throw one player or unit of players under the bus, but the drops and mistakes by Roundtree and WR core during the O$U game is one of the reasons we lost. Lucky for us that game is in the past and this group is going to be looking for redemption. Don’t let that one game fool you this is still one of the most talented groups of Wideouts in the country. Roundtree finished the regular season with 882 yards and 6 TD while Darryl Stonum finished with 574 yards and 4 TDs. Even the limited by injury Hemingway and Odoms both questionable for the game finished with a combined 758 and 4 TDs. The talent and ability is and against a weaker MSU secondary. These players just need to focus and put the rest of the season in the past.
The Michigan Defense Vs. The MSU Run- Defense…We have not seen much of this from the team this year. This unit has more to prove than any other in college football ranked in the bottom in points allowed Run and pass defense. But it’s not all bad, the team does have a few bright spots and these young stars will be instrumental in this bowl game. The Key to stopping MSU is stopping the run, this may be easier said than done both RB Vick Ballard(892 yards and 16 TDs) and QB Chris Relf( 643 yards and 4 TDs) are Running threats. This is Where Future NFLer Mike Martin, Trick or Treat Jonas Mouton and Cult favorite walk-on Jordan Kovacs Must show their improvements. This unit must stop the run, forcing Relf into the spotty MSU passing game.
Keep a look out next Thursday for Predictions of this game.
